NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 11, 2025) – Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s officials say a nine-year-old boy in the Dundee area was not seriously injured after receiving shrapnel wounds from a .22 caliber bullet that he caused to explode with a hammer.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell says 911 got the call from a Sunset Boulevard residence Thursday around 7 p.m.

The boy was struck in the right forearm and left ankle. He was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Campbell says there was no gun involved and that the boy’s younger brother gave the same account that the nine-year-old was striking a bullet he found.

A report will still go to Tuscarawas County Job and Family Services for review as a matter of regular protocol.

He says it’s another reminder for parents to talk to kids about the dangers of guns and ammunition.
