NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Nov. 11, 2024)- The local Friends of the Homeless organization is getting some recognition for its efforts to uplift those in need.

Board President Rev. Joe Svancara joined the Tuscarawas County Commissioners last Monday for the reading of a proclamation highlighting the impact of the organization that has housed and fed more than 4,500 men, women, and children since 2005.

“Guests receive a wide range of services including counseling, occupational therapy, Bible study, life skills, and more from our partners at Bridges to Wellness, Access Tusc/Healthy Tusc, Wellmore Centre, ADAMHS Board and many others.”

Svancara appreciated the support, which comes as they get ready to begin constructing a new homeless shelter behind the current one in downtown New Philadelphia.

“We truly believe when we help ‘The Least of These’ in our community and give them a hand up, it just make the whole community that much safe, that much more prosperous, and better for everyone.”

Board of Commissioners President Kristen Zemis sees the shelter as a critical part of the local social and behavioral health services network.

“We’re all partners and this is part of the community that is here. I hope everybody gets on a path that is healthy and independent, and some people need extra help.”

Svancara says with fundraising for the new shelter now about halfway to the $4.5-million goal, construction could begin by the end of the year. For details or to contribute, visit the Friends of the Homeless website and click House of Hope.
