NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 8, 2023) – The Tuscarawas County Humane Society is investigating another animal abandonment case.

Someone apparently left a young pitbull-type dog in a crate along Crooked Run Road that a passerby found Monday afternoon and brought to the county dog pound. Facility and Adoption Specialist Beth Lewis says it’s frustrating and disappointing because the owner could have stopped by and surrendered the dog instead of leaving him alone on the side of the road to suffer.

“If you can’t keep your dog for whatever reason, there is no reason in Tuscarawas County to drive a dog out somewhere and drop it off on the side of the road. All you have to do is call us during business hours, and we will figure out a way for you to surrender your dog to us.”

She says the pup seemed to have been neglected for quite some time.

“The crate was just covered in feces. The dog was covered in feces with super long, overgrown toenails, infested with fleas, skinny, just in horrible condition.”

The dog got a bath, nail trim, and lots of pets before being turned over to the humane society. Lewis says officials there will follow up on a tip the pound received and try to figure out who was responsible so they can be charged accordingly.
