Dover firefighters investigating Tuesday morning kitchen fire
DOVER (WJER) (December 20, 2022) – A dog was killed and a home severely damaged by smoke from a kitchen fire Tuesday morning.
Fire Captain Brooks Ross says no one was home in the 900 block of East 4th Street when a crossing guard at nearby East Elementary School reported smoke coming from the roof just before 8 a.m.
Police arrived first to find a lot of smoke and upgraded the call to a structure fire.
Ross says firefighters were quickly able to locate the fire in the kitchen and put it out. They carried two dogs out of the house and performed CPR. One died at the scene. The other was rushed to a veterinary office.
Ross says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
He says fire damage was limited to the kitchen, but there is severe smoke damage throughout. He expects the house will require extensive renovation work.
Ross says the family will have to stay somewhere else for a while. He says that is especially unfortunate because they went through a similar situation when a tree fell on the house a year or two ago.
Insurance agents and restoration crews were on the scene before firefighters left.
