Dover girls top Minerva 7-1
The Dover girls soccer team beat Minerva 7-1 Thursday.
Dover Coach James Kline provided this summary:
On a beautiful Thursday evening, we hosted the Minerva Lions. Last year, Minerva was a team that we thought should leave with a victory, but instead left with a tie. I don’t know if that was the key reason for how well we played last night, but whatever it was the team came ready to play from the start. We were possessing the ball very well, switching the point of attack and playing some really nice soccer in the first ten minutes. We were earning our chances and you could see that a goal was coming. Then, in the eleventh minute of the game, we earned a corner. Cashlyn Harmon played a great ball for Ava Zobel to be able to run through, get a foot on it and beat the keeper for her first goal of the season and of the game. The scoring didn’t stop there and about three minutes later Emilyn Feller received a nice through ball from Taylor Vaughan and hit a shot that the keeper couldn’t handle for our second goal. Almost a minute after the restart Kenzie Wright was able to break through the defense and score her second goal of the season. Up 3-0 you could see that we are still trying to find our game conditioning and our level of play dropped a little, but we were able to find one more goal before the half when Cashlyn Harmon split two defenders with a nice through ball to Carley Noretto and Carley placed a nice shot past the goalie for our last goal of the half.
Going into the second half, we had two objectives which were to preserve the shutout and put a couple more goals on the board. We accomplished one of those goals when fifteen minutes into the second half Abigail Lane struck a nice ball from outside of the eighteen and placed it well to the back post for her first goal of the season. Three minutes later, Miley Patton had a nice assist to Taylor Vaughan who scored her first goal of the game and season. Then, with ten minutes left in the second half, Minerva was able to sneak a ball through our backline for their first goal of the game. With six minutes left in the game, we earned a free kick just over the half field line. Ava Zobel drove a nice ball to Cashlyn Harmon who brought it down nicely and in stride to her right foot where she hit a beautiful shot that hit the back post and ricocheted across the goal into the opposite side netting for our seventh and final goal of the game. Elizabeth Lane ended with three saves and the game finished, 7-1.
Overall, we played some really nice soccer and it was a nice rebound after our first loss on Tuesday. Our overall record improved to 2-1 as we travel across the river tomorrow (Saturday) to take on our rivals at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium with a kickoff time of 5:00 PM.
