Dover Mosquito Spraying Planned After West Nile Virus Found

| August 18, 2026

DOVER (WJER) (Aug. 18. 2026) – The Tuscarawas County health department will spray for mosquitoes in Dover this week after detecting West Nile virus in mosquito samples there.

Health Department Spokesperson Jennifer Demuth says West Nile detection happens every year, but usually earlier in the summer. She says mosquito activity has not been quite as high this year.

Spraying will take place in Dover tonight and Wednesday between 8 and 11 p.m. It will be postponed if the weather is bad.

The West Nile positive mosquito samples were collected July 29th on North Crater Avenue and West 14th Street.

The Ohio Department of Health reports mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in more than 25 Ohio counties. However, there are no reports of West Nile virus in any people, birds or animals this year.

Eighty percent of people who get West Nile virus don’t show any symptoms. Serious illness and death have occurred in rare cases among older adults and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions or compromised immune systems.
