| February 1, 2024

WASHINGTON TWP.   (WJER) (Feb. 1, 2024) – A Port Washington man has been arrested following a fatal crash involving a horse and buggy just east of Newcomerstown Wednesday night.

52-year-old Menno Troyer of Newcomerstown was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on state Route 258 that occurred at about 7 p.m.

The State Highway Patrol says his buggy was westbound when it was struck by an oncoming car that had gone left of center driven by 68-year-old Benjamin P. Henry.

Patrol Sgt. Kyle Shirer says Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s deputies located Henry’s car in a ditch about a mile from the crash scene. He was taken into custody without incident.

Henry is in the Tuscarawas County Jail on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. The case was forwarded to the Tuscarawas County prosecutor for further review.

The horse was apparently returned to its farm. The extent of its injuries, if any, is unknown.
