Program about the History of the Post Office in Tuscarawas County

/ October 26, 2024

The event

The Tuscora Stamp Club and the Dover Public Library are pleased to host local philatelist Scott Pendleton on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2:00 PM in the community room. Pendleton will talk about the 78 different post offices that have existed in Tuscarawas County. He will share how each office got its name, where they are located and why they were located on that site. Pendleton will also talk about postmarks and “dead” post offices. In addition to the talk, members of the Tuscora Stamp Club will have several stamp collections on display that afternoon.

Pendleton, a veterinarian in the Cadiz area, became interested in stamps because his grandmother began purchasing stamps for him from the post office as they were issued in 1972. When he was 12 years old, he found a group of postcards from the early 1900s in a crank record player. They were franked with a one cent Ben Franklin from the 1902 issue. That was the beginning of his collecting postal history and that issue, which continues today. His interest in local history led him to collect covers and uses from primarily Belmont, Harrison and Jefferson counties.

This program will be held on Saturday, October 26 at 2:00 PM. Register online at www.doverlibrary.org/events or call the library at 330-343-6123.
