Father Hopes Son’s Legacy Will Support Mental Health

| July 14, 2026

Pictures and a painting of Jacob Holbrook were displayed as loved ones gathered at Tuscora Park to celebrate his life on July 10th.

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 14, 2026) – A Coshocton man hopes his son’s death can help save someone else.

Family and friends recently gathered at Tuscora Park to remember 29-year-old Jacob Holbrook of the New Philadelphia area. Holbrook’s body was recovered from the Tuscarawas River June 22nd. Authorities say there were no signs of foul play, but the official cause of death is pending toxicology results.

His father, Curtis Wilkerson, says Holbrook struggled with mental illness and addiction, but was deeply loved and a devoted father before his illness took over.

Wilkerson now wants to launch the Jacob Holbrook Mental Health Foundation to help people facing mental health challenges with clothing, medication and other basic needs. Wilkerson also plans to hold an annual mental health awareness event in Jacob’s memory every June 22nd at Tuscora Park — a place he says was Jacob’s safe haven.

His message: if you’re struggling, don’t wait to ask for help. Talk to a family member, counselor or anyone willing to listen.
