NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Dec. 19, 2023) – Firefighters spent the morning battling a blaze that caused extensive damage to a home on the northeast side of town.

Assistant Fire Chief Matt Tharp didn’t have a cost estimate but said the resident of the home in the 500 block of Third Street, who was away when the fire broke out, will have to stay elsewhere for the time being.

“We’re working right now with our Cares Team to get her placement into a hotel tonight. She doesn’t have a place to stay, so after that once insurance kicks in we’ll figure stuff out for her.”

Four pets – two dogs and two cats – perished in the fire that was reported to 911 around 7:45 am.

“Upon arrival, we had heavy, black smoke coming out of the front window and front door. Upon a 360, we had heavy fire coming out of the back door of the kitchen area up onto the second level of the patio.”

Crews from the Dover and Uhrichsville fire departments and Smith Ambulance assisted. Tharp says firefighters ran a hose inside to douse the flames and had the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The cause wasn’t immediately known.
