GIRLS SOCCER: Dover shuts out Philo
The Dover girls soccer team beat Philo 5-0 Tuesday. Here is Dover Coach James Kline’s wrapup:
Last night, the Dover Tornadoes continued their travels with a trip to Duncan Falls to take on the Philo Electrics. It was an extremely hot day and it was our fifth game in 10 days. Energy and safety were our biggest concerns going into the game outside of trying to win the game.
However, Emilyn Feller is one player who brings the energy every game and put us on the board quickly. Just under two minutes into the game, Abby Jones played a nice diagonal ball through to Emilyn who slipped a shot past the goalkeeper who was coming out for our first goal of the game. After that, it seemed that the game really began to slow down. The field was hard and bumpy which led to us struggling to possess the ball and move it cleanly around the field. Then, about twenty minutes later, Taylor Vaughan made a nice pass to a crossing Emilyn Feller who took a touch across the box and placed a nice backside shot for her second goal of the game. Then, with three minutes left in the second half off a goal kick we were able to get our third goal of the half. It was some pretty soccer, after Elizabeth Lane’s goal kick we took a total of eight touches (including the shot) to score the goal. Four players touched it, two touches by Abby to Ava who took two forward touches, played Taylor into space who one touch crossed it back to Ava who slid it to Kenzie Wright who settled the ball across her body and finished it into the back post. A minute later, Ava Zobel played a ball over the top of their backline for Kenzie to run through and take two touches to finish another goal before the half. At halftime, we were up 4-0.
The second half you could tell that the heat, field conditions, and losing a player to injury were playing heavy on everyone. Our goal was to keep our shutout and get out of the game without any more injuries. We were able to get one more on the board with 12 minutes left in the game when Ansley Bollon beat her defender and played a nice cross that found Kenzie’s foot for her third goal of the game, giving her a hat trick. The final score was 5-0. Elizabeth Lane and the starting defense of Ava Zobel, Rachel Pfeiffer, and Peyton Grafe earned their second shutout while Elizabeth ended with eight saves.
The win brings Dover’s overall record to 4-1. The team now has a week off before returning from the holiday break to travel to take on a tough Louisville team on Wednesday, September 4th.
