AKRON (WJER) (April 22, 2025) – The Ohio and Erie Canalway Coalition is hoping to see a lot of people active outdoors this week as part of its annual Healthy Steps program that continues through April.

Spokesperson Emily Gyulai says they have a record 683 participants in the month-long program this year who track and submit their steps on the Towpath Trail and elsewhere.

Prizes are awarded to random participants each week, as well as the top finishers each week and at the end of the month.

The Healthy Steps program in 2024 had 601 participants. They walked a combined total of more than 120 million steps last April.  That’s over 35,000 miles.

Gyulai says participation in 2024 was a record, so they’re happy to see involvement keep growing.

She says those who missed out can save the date for the Coalition’s Goodyear Towpath Trek Hike and Bike program happening later this year, September through November.
