Homeless shelter on tonight’s agenda in New Philadelphia
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (March 13, 2023) – City Council members are expecting a big crowd at its zoning and annexation committee meeting Monday at 6 p.m.
That’s when the committee will consider a zoning change request to allow a new homeless shelter behind Preach the Word Ministries on state Route 39 just northeast of the downtown area.
Residents have provided passionate testimony both for and against the proposal.
Council woman and committee chair Cheryl Ramos is asking speakers at today’s meeting not to stray from the topic of zoning.
“We’re going to stick our discussion to that and not the merits of the shelter,” she said at a recent Council meeting.
Ramos is also setting a three-minute time limit for comments.
The meeting agenda reads:
“To consider a request by The Friends of the Homeless to amend the residential zoning Code for a portion of 435 Fair Ave. NE Rear (Parcel #4301969001) to permit operation Of a homeless shelter (20 beds for women and 20 beds for men and six family units)., And any other matter that should come before Committee.”
