I-77 North Reopens After Crash Injures Three, Including Infant
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 18, 2026) – Interstate 77 north was shut down for about an hour and a half Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle crash in Tuscarawas County that injured all three people inside the vehicle, including a 2-month-old baby who authorities say was ejected.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia Post Sgt. Jennifer Makris, troopers were notified of the crash around 8:10 a.m.
“It was a black 2008 Chevy Cobalt traveling northbound when it went off the right side of the road, struck a fence and a utility box, and overturned,” Makris said.
Makris said the infant was not secured in a car seat and was thrown from the vehicle during the crash. Both northbound lanes of I-77, south of the U.S. 250 split, were closed so a medical helicopter could land.
The baby was flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital. The driver and a female passenger were taken by ambulance. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Investigators are still working to determine why the vehicle went off the right side of the road.
