Indian Valley tops area 2024 state report card overall scores

| September 13, 2024

GNADENHUTTEN (WJER) (Sept. 13, 2024)  – The Ohio Department of Education has released its state school report cards for 2024.

Districts receive 1-5 star ratings in half-star increments for categories that include achievement, progress, gap closing, early literacy, graduation, and overall.

Indian Valley scored the highest out of the eight public districts in Tuscarawas County with four and a half stars for its overall rating.

Superintendent Ira Wentworth says he learned of his district’s results through a text message this morning.

“When I saw the text I gave a hoop and a holler and a little bit of a shout there, just like scoring a touchdown or running a good time at a track meet,” Wentworth said. “We’re pretty excited around here.”

Wentworth credits the success to the teachers, the parents, and the students.

“I’m just very happy for and proud of our teaching staff and our support staff that are just so dedicated to making sure our kiddos achieve and learn to those highest levels,” he said.

Wentworth says the district has found success by making it a point several years ago to chase student learning, rather than state report card scores.

“We have internal metrics, we have internal measures that we look at and we monitor throughout the school year,” he said. “Our teachers adjust our academic programs based upon the feedback that they’re seeing from the student performance throughout the school year.”

Meanwhile, the Dover, Garaway, and Tusky Valley districts received overall ratings of four stars.

New Philadelphia and Strasburg scored three and a half stars.

Claymont and Newcomerstown earned overall ratings of three stars.
