UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) (May 30, 2023) – Firefighters say the investigation continues into the cause of the weekend fire that displaced 75 residents at the Jaycee Village apartments.

Someone called 9-1-1 reporting the fire at the 52-unit apartment complex at 200 Claymont Drive about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Fire Chief Judd Edwards says the fire did start in a third-floor apartment in the northeast corner of the building.  He says the State Fire Marshal’s Office is involved.

“With a building that size and a fire loss potential of that size, that’s standard procedure for us,” said Edwards.

Edwards says there is significant damage to the apartment where the blaze started, as well as to adjoining apartments and the attic space above them. There was also smoke damage to others on the third floor and water damage to the units below.

Edwards says firefighters did have to rescue one third-floor resident, who wasn’t injured.

The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced.
