Nature camp hosting 35th-annual Pig Roast
DOVER (WJER) The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has one of its biggest fundraisers of the year this weekend.
Treasurer Nancy Schoenbaum has been busy the past few days preparing for their 35th-annual Pig Roast.
“I’ve been picking up baked goods for our dessert table. I’ve been icing pig cookies, which are famous for our pig roast. I made about 300 pig-shaped cookies. You know, just picking up all the last-minute things.”
The Pig Roast is Saturday from 3 to 6 pm and Sunday from 11 to 4 at the more than 800-acre nature camp on Boyscout Road Northeast between Dover and Zoarville.
“All they need to do is come in and join us. We have golf carts to bring you down to our dining hall because that hill is a little steep. We have golf carts and a hay wagon that we’ll give you a little hayride.”
For $25, you get a roast pork and barbequed chicken dinner with all the fixings – available for dine-in or carryout – and kids eat for $15.
“We used to do a big pig but now that we serve about a thousand people, we’ve had to go to pork butts in a pig cooker. We tried that. I think the last time we did it was like seven pigs and we ran out of places to put them, so now we do pork butt, and it’s delicious pork.”
Diners are encouraged to come early or stick around after the meal for a hike along the camp’s historic Centennial Trail. There’s also an onsite museum featuring Scouting memorabilia from different eras.
