New Phila paving program gets $1-million funding boost
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Dec. 31, 2024) – The city is benefitting from a recent round of federal dollars to be awarded through a state program that helps qualifying communities repave their roads.
Service Director Ron McAbier says the city requested assistance for parts of Second Street Northwest, Fair, Union and Reiser avenues.
“Construction is scheduled to be at $976,545 and engineering at $68,358 for a total pricetag of $1,044,903, and our portion of that is just $54,995.”
The Ohio Department of Transportation administers the program that assists cities with at least 5,000 but fewer than 25,000 residents. City council approved the grant agreement last week, as recommended by McAbier and the Finance Committee.
“We’ve done it before. This ain’t our first one as far as the Small Cities paving. Again, to get $1.1-million worth of paving for $55,000, we should all be jumping in the streets.”
New Phila applied for another Small Cities paving grant earlier this year but had that application rejected.
