New Philadelphia Council to discuss mayor’s DORA request
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 19. 2024) – Residents are getting a chance tonight to express their opinions to the city council members who will be deciding whether to establish a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area – or DORA – for alcoholic beverages downtown.
Mayor Joel Day is asking council to pass a new ordinance to create a DORA for special events. The idea has drawn responses from supporters and opponents who’ve spoken at council meetings so far this year.
Council member Cheryl Ramos has come out against having a DORA.
“It would change our community, culture, values, and our community norms about open-carry alcohol, especially in front of minors,” Ramos previously said.
Others like the idea, including Tuscarawas Arts Partnership Director Wilma Mullet, who told council she has seen DORAs at arts festivals and community events elsewhere without any negative consequences.
“You may have even gone to places like Wooster where they do have a DORA plan implemented and you wouldn’t have known it was there,” said Mullet.
Council’s meeting to discuss and receive public comments regarding DORA is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at council chambers.
