New Philadelphia man gets 6 months in jail for assaults at football game
MILLERSBURG (WJER) (August 28, 2024) – A New Philadelphia man who assaulted three people at a freshmen football game last year will spend six months in the Holmes County jail.
Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Warner handed down the punishment earlier this month against 47-year-old Raymond Korns a month after he pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and two misdemeanor assault charges.
Holmes County Prosecutor Matt Muzic says Korns initially faced six counts, including felonious assault, before pleading guilty to lesser charges. The judge sentenced Korns to 180 days in jail on Aug. 15, with credit for one day served and approval for participation in the jail’s work release program. He was scheduled to begin his sentence Aug. 23.
The incidents took place at a West Holmes freshmen football game on Oct. 12 and were captured on bystanders’ cell phone video.
Holmes County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Tim Stryker said Korns was sitting on the West Holmes side “yelling and screaming” when a West Holmes parent asked him to calm down. That led to a confrontation where a 72-year-old man “got up to kind of make peace at which time Mr. Korns assaulted him.”
Stryker says Korns also struck a 52-year-old man in the bleachers and later hit another man with his vehicle as he left the parking lot.
A sheriff’s sergeant pulled Korns over a short while later.
Stryker says the older Millersburg man was transported to Pomerene Hospital for a facial injury.
