One of four captains will become New Philadelphia’s next police chief

| April 17, 2023

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (April 17, 2023) – The search for the city’s next police chief started Monday.

Four police captains were scheduled to take the written portion of the evaluation to determine which will be promoted to chief. They are Rocky Dusenberry, Ty Norris, Tessa Pohovey, and Paul Rossi.

City Safety Director Greg Popham says any one of them would be a good fit to replace Mike Goodwin, who is retiring in July.

Popham says larger cities conduct widespread searches for police chiefs. New Philadelphia is not a charter city, so it follows Ohio Revised Code and promotes from within the city’s ranks.

The written test is worth 50 percent of the evaluation. Those who pass the test will undergo another assessment in a few weeks. Seniority also plays a role. The civil service commission will evaluate all the data.

Popham says he expects the city will name its next chief before June.
