Planners break ground on Tuscora Park pickleball courts

| August 8, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 8, 2022) – Construction crews are getting to work on the newest addition slated for Tuscora Park.

City officials, members of the Tuscora Park Foundation, and players with the T-County Pickleball Club took part in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony on Monday on four new pickleball courts next to where the tennis courts are located.

Foundation President Mike Ernest says it has been about a three-year process to get to this point, starting when the sport was just gaining popularity in the area.

“We weren’t sure if it was just a fad,” he said. “We let it percolate for a little bit and it became clear to us that it was not just a fad.”

“This is a legitimate sport that is really growing in interest,” said Ernest.

Ernest says the foundation and club members have generated about $190,000 of the approximately $220,000 construction goal through grants, donations, and fundraisers such as pancake breakfasts.

He says the courts should be finished with lighting and fencing around them in approximately two months, weather permitting.
