Police id, apprehend suspect in fatal hit-and-run
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 15, 2022) – It didn’t take long for police to track down the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
Chief Mike Goodwin says they believe they’ve identified the driver of the vehicle that crashed into two men sitting in front of an apartment complex across from the airport just before 9 pm Tuesday.
“We have an individual of custody. In the process, they are conferring with the county prosecutor’s office. This individual will be interviewed, and we will then submit the paperwork to the county prosecutor for the appropriate charges.”
One of the men, 55-year-old Ronald Rader, died at Aultman Hospital following the crash. Goodwin says the other was hospitalized but is expected to recover.
“My understanding is he’s being treated at the hospital, I do not think for life-threatening injuries. The person who passed I believe is at the Stark County Coroner’s Office since he technically passed away in Stark County. They are the ones that are handling the investigation of the death.”
The suspect is a 22-year-old New Philadelphia man. Goodwin says they believe he was driving recklessly in a parking area and lost control of his vehicle.
