Quakers celebrate boys track state championship
NEW PHILADELPHIA – The boys on the New Philadelphia track team had their sights set on an OHSAA state championship since they won an indoor state championship this past winter. But it came down to the wire for the Quakers at the state track meet Saturday and Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

On day one, the Quakers got points from the 4th place 4-by-800 relay team, fifth place by Cade Jones in the pole vault and a state championship from Marcus Adelman in the 3200 in a dramatic half-second win over two-time cross country state champion Tippecanoe’s Landon Kimmel.
On day two, Alec Adelman was fourth and Wyatt Lendon first in the 1600, putting the Quakers in mix for a championship.
New Philadelphia needed both its high jumpers – Jaxson Rice and Mitchell Miller – to reach the podium, and they did, placing third and 7th respectively.
Still, there was one event left – the 4 by 400 – and Big Walnut had a team in that race. The Golden Eagles failed to place, allowing New Philadelphia to tie with Big Walnut for co-champions of Division II. Quaker Coach Jeremy Rodgers was elated.
Fans and family welcomed the team back to Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium around 8:30 Sunday night.
The Quakers were not the only Tuscarawas County state champions from over the weekend. Indian Valley hurdler Carsen Hostetler won a state title in the 300 hurdles while also placing third in the 110 hurdles with a school record time.
