NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Jan. 17, 2024) – Ten young artists will appear on the billboards going up to promote this year’s Rainbow Connection Telethon.

Executive Director Perci Garner says the organization just wrapped up its first-ever art contest for area students, picking nine runners-up and Dover sixth-grader Anderson O’Brien as the grand prize winner.

“He did a good job of displaying kind of what we want to display from the community from the Rainbow Connection’s perspective. He’s got a lot of ribbons there showing all the different diseases and stuff that we as people face all over the world but especially here in Tuscarawas County, and he incorporated a rainbow, too.”

O’Brien will be pictured on two billboards alongside his artwork and the other art contest winners, who will also be getting invitations to appear on stage during the March 10th telethon.

“If they’re willing to come on the telethon. I know kids are shy and they’re 12 and stuff like that, and so if they’re willing to come on the telethon, we would love to have him.”

The nine runners-up were Ashtyn Scott, 13; Pippen Miller, 7; Kadence Wilkinson, 13; Sela Perez-Ixcoy, 15; Ryon Margo, 7; Parker Bunnelle, 13; Denisse Ajanel Cox, 9; Mia van Pelt, 9; and Piper Kennedy, 6.

Garner says they plan to make the art contest a yearly occurrence and do a better job of getting the word out next year.
