Red Cross blood drive to honor Tusky Valley bus crash victims

| December 28, 2023

BOLIVAR (WJER) (Dec. 28, 2023) – There’s a blood drive on Friday in honor of those killed or injured in the Tusky Valley charter bus crash.

Alumni and professional nurse Melissa Weaver is sponsoring the six-hour collection at Faith Baptist Church in Bolivar.

“Being a nurse, I know blood is crucial in saving lives, and I felt this was a way I could help say thank you to not only the American Red Cross but all of the first responders and EMTS and doctors and nurses who helped take care of everybody that day.”

Red Cross Regional Communications Manager Christy Peters says events like these ensure they can get life-saving blood to where it’s needed whenever tragedy strikes.

“On the day of the bus accident, the American Red Cross provided 30 extra units of blood to local hospitals in order to help treat those who were injured. If we don’t have people who are giving, we don’t have those extra 30 units ready to go when an emergency happens.”

Friday’s Tusky Valley blood drive goes from 11 am until 5 pm. Walk-ins are welcome but those wanting to schedule an appointment can do so by visiting red-cross-blood.org and entering the sponsor code FaithBaptist or calling 1-800-Red-Cross.
