Residents asked to help honor fallen law enforcement officers

| May 13, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (May 13, 2022) – The local FOP chapter is encouraging community members to fly their flags at half-staff Sunday to honor fallen law enforcement officers.

Tuscora Lodge President Bob Everett says it’s National Peace Officer Memorial Day, a time to pay tribute to the men and women in blue who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting their communities.

“All they’re trying to do is go out and do their job and do the best they can, and unfortunately they stop a car in the middle of the night – they’re murdered. They go to a domestic situation – they’re murdered. Sometimes, they’re even just in their car and at a traffic signal somewhere, and they get ambushed.”

The FOP has also been asking people to illuminate their homes and businesses in blue lights all this week to show their appreciation for law enforcement.

“We’ve had so many folks that want to defund the police and abolish the police and reenvision the police and, you know, whatever movement they seem to be on. And it’s so nice in our communities, close by especially, we see folks that wanna support the police.”

Last year, 617 law enforcement officers nationwide lost their lives in the line of duty or due to COVID-19.
