State-funded scholarship program for STEM students accepting applications

| February 21, 2022

COLUMBUS (WJER) (Feb. 21, 2022) – Tuscarawas County’s representative in the Ohio House is promoting a scholarship opportunity for the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators.

Brett Hillyer says a student from each of the state’s 99 House and 33 Senate districts will receive $1,000 toward their future educational pursuits through the Believe in Ohio Statewide STEM Innovation and Entrepreneurship Scholarship Program.

“There are some criteria that must be met: either a junior or a senior in any Ohio high school, meaning you graduate in either the Class of 2022 or 2023; distinguished yourself in a significant or rigorous STEM competition, research project, or something that was published.”

It’s the second year for the scholarship program that aims to create a culture of innovation within Ohio’s high schools and encourage students to continue their education and careers in the state. Hillyer says Intel’s plans to develop two microchip production facilities in Licking County highlights the importance of these types of opportunities.

“If Eastern Ohio and Ohio in general want to be able to continue to attract the ancillary businesses that will supply Intel and provide Intel with employees that wanna make a career there, we certainly need to be encouraging this in our schools and encouraging individuals to want to pursue those opportunities.”

Applications are due April 15th and can be found in area high school guidance offices and online at believeinohio.org/scholarships.
