NEW PHILADELPHIA – (WJER) (Dec. 27, 2024) – The suspect accused of attacking the clerk during a robbery attempt at the Dover Speedway on South Wooster Avenue this month now faces formal charges.
A Tuscarawas County Grand Jury has handed down a five-count indictment, all felonies, against 39-year-old John A. McNutt of Dover for the December 9th incident where he allegedly struck the clerk in the head repeatedly with a hammer and ran off.
“She’s very lucky to be alive,” said Tuscarawas County Prosecutor Ryan Styer.
The most serious charge against McNutt is attempted murder.
“The grand jury’s conclusion was that the evidence suggested that this wasn’t only a felonious assault but that he did have the purpose to cause her death,” Styer said.
The indictment also includes two counts each of aggravated robbery and felonious assault.
McNutt is scheduled to be arraigned in the courtroom of Common Pleas Judge Elizabeth Thomakos January 15th. He remains in the county jail on $500,000 bond.
