DOVER TWP (WJER) (April 16, 2024) – The New Philadelphia Highway Patrol Post is investigating a messy semi-truck crash on I-77 northbound that killed the driver.

Lt. Johnnie Maier says it happened just after 10:30 am just south of the Strasburg exit when the northbound truck drifted off the right side of the road, traveled down an embankment, struck a tree, and overturned.

“It is still being investigated whether or not something led to him drifting off the road. Whether it be something that may have come up while he was driving the truck or medically related, those things are unknown at this time.”

The driver who lost his life was 58-year-old Shelton McCoy of Salem. The truck was hauling an open-style trailer full of rocks that spilled onto the highway.

“You can imagine that trailer overturning, the load overturning onto the ground, we have quite a bit of cleanup. Along with that, we’re several feet off the roadway down an embankment and in a tree line, so that’s causing it to be a little more difficult.”

There was a secondary crash on I-77 northbound while traffic was backed up. Maier didn’t have all the details but said no one was seriously injured.
