Tuesday evening blaze destroys Uhrichsville home
UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) (June 21, 2023) – Firefighters spent nearly six hours at the scene of a fire that destroyed a single-story home at 313 North Romig Street.
It erupted just before 7 p.m. Tuesday night. Firefighters remained there until after midnight this morning.
Flames could be seen extending in all directions with gray smoke clouding the neighborhood.
Fire Captain Nathan Crouse says the owner was not currently living at the home, but some people who were staying there made it out without injuries.
Crouse says his department is working with the State Fire Marshal’s office to determine a cause and will be reviewing statements and interviews.
He says several calls came in reporting the fire to authorities.
“Crews responded. On their arrival they found heavy fire coming out the front porch, extending into the house, along the exterior of the house,” Crouse said. “The fire was moving pretty quickly.”
Crouse says at one point, a live powerline fell onto a hose, burning it and leaving it inoperable. He says it took over an hour just to get the fire under control. Crews didn’t leave until nearly 1 a.m., attacking hotspots while the house was being excavated.
Departments from Gnadenhutten, Arrowhead Joint Fire District, Warwick Township, New Philadelphia and Dennison assisted.
