Uhrichsville firefighters called to restaurant, home fires to start off week

| September 12, 2022

UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) (Sept. 12, 2022) – It’s been a very active 24 hours for the city fire department.

Fire Captain Wes Dillon says they were first called to the Wendy’s restaurant near McCauley Drive just before 7 a.m. Sunday for an appliance fire. He says upon arrival they saw heavy black smoke coming from the exhaust vent.

“The windows in the restaurant were already beginning to become stained with smoke, so you could hardly see in any of the windows,” said Dillon.

He says it was an accidental fire that started below a deep fryer as employees were getting ready to open for the day. Firefighters had water on it within two minutes of getting on the scene.

“The damage was really contained to the area of the deep fryers and then maybe the ceiling above it a little bit,” he said.

Dillon was unsure how long the restaurant would have to be closed for repairs.

Uhrichsville firefighters were then called at 12:24 this morning to a fire that Dillon says caused significant damage throughout a house in the 400 block of Deersville Avenue. Dillon described the fire as very labor intensive, taking about an hour for firefighters to have under control. It included cutting a hole into the roof to check for extension into the attic space.

“Crews made an interior attack and found lots of fire inside the house. They were able to extinguish it. It was very tough for them,” he said.

Dillon says there were no injuries in either incident. Nobody was home at the time of the Deersville Avenue fire and the cause is under investigation.
