10:30 PM: Michael Rulli wins Republican primary in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, site of train derailment

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — State Sen. Michael Rulli has won the Republican primary in Eastern Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, establishing himself as a likely new leader of an area devastated by a toxic train derailment last year. Ohio residents were voting not once, but twice, for a nominee to replace former U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson in two elections. The first is a June special election that will determine who serves out the remainder of Johnson’s current term, and the second is a November general election whose winner will serve a full term starting in January 2025. Rulli won both nominations. The heart of the district is East Palestine, a small community that recently observed the one-year anniversary of a devastating train derailment.

10:25 PM: 51st Ohio House District Republican primary: With 81 of 81 precincts reporting in Tuscarawas County, Jodi Salvo leads incumbent Brett Hillyer 5,500 to 3,761. Her lead across the district is 6,851 to 4,809.

10:10 PM: Lisa Forbes wins Democratic nomination for Ohio Supreme Court’s only open seat

Lisa Forbes has won the Democratic nomination for the Ohio Supreme Court’s only open seat. The 8th District Court of Appeals judge defeated Judge Terri Jamison, who sits on the 10th District Court of Appeals. Forbes will face Dan Hawkins, a Republican judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, in November. The open seat is one of three seats up for election in the fall that will determine whether Democrats can flip the court from its current 4-3 Republican majority. It was vacated by Republican Joe Deters, who was appointed by Gov. Mike DeWine in 2022. Deters has decided not to seek reelection but to instead challenge Democratic Justice Melody Stewart for her seat in November.

9:45 PM:  Why AP called Ohio’s Republican US Senate primary for Bernie Moreno: Race call explained

WASHINGTON (AP) — A strong performance among voters who cast their ballots Tuesday — the day of the election in Ohio — powered Bernie Moreno to a win in the state’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate. The Associated Press declared Moreno the winner at 8:35 p.m. EDT, when he led state Sen. Matt Dolan 41% to 37%. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose was in third place with 22%. Moreno is a Cleveland businessman who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The AP was able to determine the winner by analyzing not just the overall vote totals but also the methods by which voters cast their ballots.

8:41 PM: Trump-backed Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno beats two rivals to win Ohio’s GOP Senate primary

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Trump-endorsed Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno has won the Republican Senate primary in Ohio and will face vulnerable Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown this fall. Moreno prevailed Tuesday over Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan. Former President Donald Trump stumped for Moreno three days ahead of his win. Dolan was endorsed by Gov. Mike DeWine and former U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, two of Ohio’s most prominent establishment Republicans. Brown’s seat is expected to be a top GOP target in the November general election. He is the lone Democrat holding a non-judicial statewide office in Ohio, a state that has moved steadily to the right during the Trump era.

8:24 PM: Biden and Trump notch wins in Tuesday’s primaries. Other races will offer hints on national politics

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Joe Biden and Donald Trump won their party’s primaries in Illinois on Tuesday, notching more delegates as they continue their march to a rematch in this November’s presidential election of their 2020 face off. Biden, a Democrat, and Trump, a Republican, also easily won primaries Tuesday in Ohio. Trump also won Florida’s Republican primary. There was no contest for Biden to win in Florida as Democrats there canceled their primary and opted to award all 224 of their delegates to the incumbent, a move that has precedence. Voters in some states are echoing arguments offered by Biden and Trump. Biden’s supporters see Trump as a threat to U.S. democracy. Trump supporters say Biden is too old and incompetent.

5:16 PM: Tuesday’s primaries include a key Senate race in Ohio and clues for the Biden-Trump rematch

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Five states are holding presidential primaries as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump continue to lock up support around the country after becoming their parties’ presumptive nominees. Voters are casting ballots Tuesday in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Voters in some states are echoing arguments offered by Democrat Biden and Republican Trump. Biden’s supporters see Trump as a threat to U.S. democracy. Trump supporters say Biden is too old and incompetent. The two men earned enough delegates during elections last week to clinch their spots at the top of the ticket, securing a rematch from 2020.

12:14 AM: Ohio GOP congressional primaries feature double votes and numerous candidates

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio residents are being asked to cast two votes for one seat and choose one of 11 candidates for the other in the state’s congressional primaries. There are two elections to replace former 6th Congressional District Republican Rep. Bill Johnson. The first is a special election in June to determine who will fill out the rest of his current term; the second is in November, to choose who will begin a full new term in 2025. The same nominee can be chosen for both. The district represents East Palestine, which is still feeling the effects of a toxic train derailment last year. Voters in the 2nd Congressional District have to choose among nearly a dozen candidates in the state’s most expensive race.

12:13 AM: Ohio Supreme Court primary with 2 Democrats kicks off long campaign over court’s partisan control

(AP) – The Democratic primary for one of three contested seats on the Ohio Supreme Court will kick off a high-stakes battle for partisan control of the court this fall. The court currently has a 4-3 Republican majority. To flip that, Democrats must sweep the races in November by retaining two incumbents and winning an open seat. On Tuesday, two Democrats are competing to see who will face a Republican judge in November in the open seat. Abortion is expected to be at the center of the races. Voters last year overwhelmingly approved an amendment protecting abortion rights, and the Supreme Court will be responsible for deciding how it is implemented.

12:10 AM: Tuesday’s primaries include a key Senate race in Ohio and clues for the Biden-Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — Five states will hold presidential primaries as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump continue to lock up support around the country after becoming their parties’ presumptive nominees. Democrat Biden and Republican Trump each earned enough delegates during elections last week to clinch their spots at the top of the ticket, setting them up for a rematch from 2020. Neither man faces any major challengers Tuesday. Trump is expected to easily win GOP primaries in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Biden is expected to do the same in all those states except Florida — where Democrats canceled their primary and opted to award all 224 of their delegates to Biden.

12:07 AM: High-profile elections in Ohio could give Republicans a chance to expand clout in Washington

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Republicans are watching two hot-button federal races in Ohio that could affect their chances for potentially pivotal pickups this fall. One of Tuesday’s contests is the Republican primary to face third-term Sen. Sherrod Brown this fall. The second is a GOP matchup to face longtime Rep. Marcy Kaptur in northwest Ohio. Brown and Kaptur are among the year’s most vulnerable Democrats. The contentious and expensive Senate primary features Trump-backed Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan. The Toledo-area congressional primary includes Trump-backed state Rep. Derek Merrin and former state Rep. Craig Riedel.
