Troopers highlight distracted driving law’s impact in year 1

| October 21, 2024

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Oct. 21, 2024) – State and local officials are touting the success of Ohio’s distracted driving law after a full year of enforcement, following the six-month grace period.

Sgt. Clinton Armstrong says troopers at the New Philadelphia State Highway Patrol Post responded to 106 distracted driving related crashes last year, but that’s down to just 60 so far in 2024.

He feels the law is keeping drivers off their phones.

Data shows distracted driving crashes dropped by about 1,100 for the entire state over the past year compared to the previous 12 months.

Fatal crashes attributed to distracted driving also dropped more than 19-percent in Ohio during that time period.
