SUGARCREEK (WJER) (May 9, 2025) – Sugarcreek and Baltic now have the first community-based fire departments in the state of Ohio that can perform blood transfusions from an ambulance before a patient arrives at a hospital.

Firefighters and others this week unveiled the program, made possible through the village councils and numerous partners.

Sugarcreek Fire Chief John Meek says this is crucial, especially for paramedics in rural communities away from hospitals and trauma centers when time is precious.

He says the two villages started talks about a year ago after learning Ohio would begin allowing pre-hospital transfusions.

Sugarcreek Mayor Walt Wilson says this will save lives.

American Red Cross spokesperson Kristy Peters says they rely on local donors to be able to supply the blood needed for this program.

The accomplishment has earned the village special recognition from the Ohio Governor’s Office.
