Health officials share resources and stats for Great American Smokeout
DOVER (WJER) (Nov. 20, 2025) – Today is the 49th annual Great American Smokeout, a day when the American Cancer Society invites smokers to take the first step toward quitting.
Tuscarawas County Health Department Public Health Educator Lana Schrock encourages people to use the opportunity to begin experiencing the benefits of quitting tobacco products.
She says a great place to start for anyone wanting to stop smoking is the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line, at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. The help line is for those 18 and older regardless of insurance status or income.
Health officials say tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in Ohio. Smoking is linked to at least 12 types of cancers, including lung, liver and colorectal cancers. Each year, more than 20,000 people die from a smoking-related disease in Ohio alone.
