NEW PHILADELPHIA – The annual Engineering Technology Opportunity Expo returns Wednesday, bringing together local manufacturers and a high school bridge‑building competition at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center.

Held from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the event coincides with National Engineers Week and aims to highlight regional industry while connecting students and community members with career opportunities.

Paul Dykshoorn, director of the Kent State Tuscarawas Engineering Program, says the expo functions much like a job fair.

“We give them the upper floor of the PAC, and they’re there to introduce themselves not just to our students but to the community as well,” he said. “Anybody can come in and find out what some of the local industries are doing.”

The community is also invited to view the bridges crafted by about 100 participating high school students before they undergo strength testing. The demonstration typically draws more than 350 attendees, including families of the students. First- and second‑place winners will advance to an international competition.

“Kids build them, but we break them,” Dykshoorn added, noting that roughly 300 bridges are expected to be tested Wednesday night.

Representatives from local engineering, management, personnel, and human resources teams will be on hand to discuss job openings, career paths, pay expectations, and qualifications.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come out and see what’s going on—and for anyone considering a new position to explore what’s available,” Dykshoorn said.

The expo and bridge competition are free and open to the public. More details are available at kent.edu/tusc.
