Tuscarawas County Health Department Unveils Major $2.1M Expansion and Renovations
DOVER (WJER) (May 20, 2026) — Community leaders gathered Tuesday to celebrate the completion of significant upgrades to the Tuscarawas County Health Department, marking the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public open house.
The more than $2.1 million project includes a 2,200-square-foot expansion designed to better serve residents, according to Health Commissioner Katie Seward. Enhancements feature a new conference room, expanded office space, improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and upgraded building security.

One of the most noticeable changes for visitors is the relocation of the building’s main entrance, which has been moved to the rear of the facility.
Seward noted that the scope of the project grew significantly beyond its initial purpose of replacing the building’s heating and cooling system, evolving into a broader modernization effort.
Funding for the project came from a combination of sources, including a $750,000 federal grant, American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, and additional support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In addition to the ribbon cutting, the event highlighted winners of a local art contest, with their work now displayed throughout the building.
Ohio Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff visited earlier in the day, underscoring state-level support for the improvements.
Approximately 60 people attended Tuesday’s ceremony, with more community members touring the updated facility during the open house that followed.
