Relay for America to Carry Flag Through Newcomerstown Today

| July 1, 2026

NEWCOMERSTOWN (WJER) (July 1, 2026) – A nationwide relay is making its way across the country, and it’s set to pass through our area today.

Relay for America is carrying a single American flag on a more than 3,000-mile journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., all leading up to a grand celebration on July 4th for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Volunteer runners are taking turns carrying the flag on foot over a 20-day stretch. According to a live tracker, participants are expected near the Village of Newcomerstown around 11 this morning.

The route will take them along County Road 9, then onto West and East State Streets through the village, where residents are encouraged to come out and show their support.

From there, runners will follow Route 258 along the Tuscarawas River, continue onto Dunlap Creek Road Southwest, and pass through areas including Peoli and Freeport before eventually leaving Ohio later tonight around 9 p.m.

You can follow the relay’s progress in real time at relayforamerica.org, or check out their Facebook page for more details.
