Man who shot cop’s gun sentenced to 17 to 22 1/2 years for attempted murder
NEW PHILADELPHIA – The man accused of trying to kill a New Philadelphia police officer back in January has been sentenced to 17 to 22 ½ years in prison.

Judge Michael Ernest handed down the maximum sentence to 28-year-old Dyllan Riter, who authorities say scuffled with police on January 14th and fired a single shot from an officer’s handgun that narrowly missed a detective’s head.
New Philadelphia police were responding to a report of a suspicious person behind apartments in the 1800 block of East High Avenue. Riter had been wanted for allegedly robbing two Dollar General stores in Stark County.
Riter pleaded guilty in July to amended felony charges that include attempted murder, felonious assault and grand theft involving a firearm. Riter was on probation after finishing a 4 ½ year prison sentence in 2024 for weapons, drugs and burglary charges in Stark County.
