Judge sets bond at $25k for suspect in fatal hit-and-run

| June 17, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 17, 2022) – The suspect in this week’s fatal hit-and-run crash in New Philadelphia made his first court appearance this morning.

22-year-old Justin Brill of New Philadelphia is charged in a criminal complaint with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and OVI for the Tuesday night crash that killed 55-year-old Ronald Rader and injured another man. New Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge Nan Von Allman set Brill’s bond at $25,000.

“And if the defendant does post bond, he will be placed on an alcohol monitoring and GPS monitoring anklet before being released from the jail. He will be placed on pretrial supervision in this court and then possibly if he’s bound over to be transferred to the court of common pleas. [He is] not to use or possess any alcohol or drugs.”

Brill is accused of driving off after crashing his car into Rader and another man as they were sitting in front of the Beavercreek Apartment Complex off of East High Avenue Tuesday evening. Assistant Prosecutor Kristine Beard told the judge police found him at his home still intoxicated a short time later.

“He left the scene of this horrific accident with blood everywhere for almost two hours,” she said. “And he didn’t seem to have any kind of remorse for hitting people or a house. He just simply fled the scene because he was going to get in trouble for what happened.”

Brill was transported to the county jail for processing and is due back in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
