Strasburg Council to discuss regulating marijuana-related businesses
STRASBURG (WJER) (June 27, 2022) – The village could become the next local community to regulate businesses selling medical marijuana.
Council has a work session Thursday at 6 pm to discuss the possibility of restricting them to specific areas such as industrial zones or banning them within the corporation limits. Zoning Inspector Ted Foster says he hasn’t received a permit application for a dispensary since medical marijuana became legal in Ohio more than five years ago. But with one now coming to Goshen Township, he believes it’s only a matter of time.
“Currently, it’s a recognized business, and if somebody wanted to put that in a business zoned area, then I would have to give them a permit. Right now, I think council wants to think about [this] because I don’t think it’s a matter of if this request comes. I think it’s a matter of when.”
Unless there’s a municipal ordinance stating otherwise, marijuana-related businesses are governed by the Ohio Revised Code, which prohibits them within 500 feet of schools, churches, playgrounds, and parks. The state pharmacy board recently issued a limited number of provisional dispensary licenses including one to a limited liability company planning to put one in a pocket of unincorporated land on the west side of New Philadelphia.
