Dover sending crew to Florida for hurricane recovery effort

| October 9, 2024

DOVER (October 9, 2024) – The city is sending six employees from its electric field division to Florida to help with recovery efforts from Hurricane Milton.

The dangerous storm is expected to cause catastrophic damage and days-long power outages.

Dover Mayor Shane Gunnoe says his city’s crew will arrive with many others from across Ohio on Wednesday.

“They’re all line workers. They’re going to stage in the south Georgia-north Florida area in advance of the storm, and once the storm clears, they’ll begin the process of restoring power to affected communities.”

Dover participates in the AMP Mutual Aid Program. City workers have helped with recovery efforts in other Ohio communities and following Hurricane Isaias in New Jersey back in 2020.

“The mutual aid program is an important part of all of our public power systems. We rely on trying to help each other, and hopefully someday if we ever need it they’ll come back and return the favor.”

Gunnoe says it was not difficult to recruit volunteers. They will be paid through the mutual aid agreement, which will also compensate the city for travel and equipment costs.

“We’re obviously very grateful for the volunteers from the electric field division and those linemen who are going to head out and work in the southeast to restore power to the communities affected. We’re sending our prayers to all those who have been impacted by Hurricane Milton or the hurricane that hit last week, as well.”
