Mock trial competition returns to Tuscarawas County Courthouse

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Tuscarawas County Courthouse will host the Ohio Mock Trial district competition Friday.
County offices will remain open, but five court rooms will be reserved for students from six schools looking to advance to regionals in February.
Probate and Juvenile Court Judge Adam Wilgus oversees the local competition.
“It’s just a wonderful occasion,” he said. “It really gives kids the opportunity to come in and have a chance to see and feel what it’s like to be in a courtroom and be able to display their skills. It’s amazing how many talented kids we have in Tuscarawas County.”
There is limited seating, but the public is invited to watch 10 mock trial teams from Claymont, Dover, Garaway, New Philadelphia, Steubenville and Tuscarawas Central Catholic.
“It’s remarkable how well they do at their age, being high school students. I think a lot comes down to their preparation, and many of them take it very seriously. It’s very enjoyable to watch them perform the case that they’re given.”
Each team is presented with the same case but they must make up their own questions and arguments in an allotted time. A panel of judges keeps score.
The mock trials start at 9 a.m., with award presentations after 3 p.m.
