DOVER (WJER) (Aug. 1, 2025) – The Tuscarawas County Health Department scheduled spraying for mosquitoes in Port Washington and Goshen Township Thursday night after a second county resident tested positive for a rare, mosquito-borne virus.

Health department officials say both residents who contracted the La Crosse virus were initially hospitalized before going home to recover.

The most recent patient was a 62-year-old Goshen Township man. The health department also found the virus in a mosquito sample at Union Cemetery in Port Washington.

Health Commissioner Katie Seward says residents can help by eliminating standing water on their properties where mosquitoes breed. She says scrap tires that fill with water are the worst offenders.
