Mosquito spraying scheduled for Wednesday night as the pests propagate

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Local health departments are going to take a swipe at the mosquito population on Wednesday, July 2, in what is shaping up to be a bad year for those bugged by the annoying pests.
Mosquito spraying is scheduled for Wednesday night in Fairfield Township and the city of New Philadelphia.
New Philadelphia Health Department Director of Environmental Health Zach Phillips says that department is spraying around the Southside Community Park and Soccer Complex, and at Tuscora Park.
He says the department tries to spray prior to large events including this weekend’s First Town Days. Plus, local traps showed a high count of mosquitoes.
Phillips says with all the rain in the area, he anticipates the department will be spraying a lot this summer to combat a large mosquito population.
The County Health Department has already sprayed several times this year because of high mosquito counts, including in the city of Dover, Tuscarawas, Mill Township and twice now in Fairfield.
So far, the departments have not reported any instances of West Nile Virus found in the test pools.
The health departments recommend people with breathing issues close their windows when spraying takes place on Wednesday night.
