Newcomerstown waterline break leaves road in bad shape

| March 10, 2025

NEWCOMERSTOWN – The water is back on, the boil alert is lifted and the water line is repaired. However, Mayor Pat Cadle says there is still a lot of work to do to fix the damage from Thursday’s break in a major water line on Canal Street.

Cadle says crews replaced about 10 feet of that 10- to 12-inch line, but a lot of water got out, and that section of road remains closed.

“The bigger problem we’re going to have is repairing the road because the water undercut not just that area where the break was but at least 50 feet in either direction and caused an upheaval of the road. That whole section of road is going to have to be replaced.”

Cadle says waterline breaks aren’t unique to Newcomerstown this winter.

“I’m sure other villages and cities have had the same problem this year as far as the thawing and freezing, but it just happened to hit a main line and the valves that normally would cut it off so you wouldn’t have to turn down the whole town froze or broke. And you lost a lot of water.”

Cadle praised the crews who worked day and night to fix the line.

“I give our water and street departments a lot of credit.”

He also appreciated the use of Tuscarawas County’s “Reverse 9-1-1” system to keep residents informed during the ordeal.
