NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Jan. 28, 2026) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is asking drivers to remain cautious as crews continue working to clear roads following the recent winter storm. District 11 spokeswoman Lauren Borell said crews still have significant cleanup ahead of them, with blowing and drifting snow remaining a concern.

Borell says that crews are focusing on major routes such as I‑77, working to peel back snow from the shoulders to widen travel lanes and improve safety. She emphasized that drivers should continue taking their time on the roadways, as large amounts of snow remain piled along the sides. Slipping into these snowbanks can create dangerous situations for motorists.

Throughout the storm, persistent snowfall combined with frigid temperatures created the biggest challenges for road crews, though no major problems were reported. Borell extended thanks to residents who chose to stay home during the storm, saying lighter traffic allowed crews to work more efficiently and without significant delays.

Even as skies have cleared, ODOT warns that blowing and drifting snow—especially in rural areas—can cause road conditions to change quickly. Homeowners clearing driveways are also advised not to push snow into roadways, as this can create additional slick spots for passing vehicles.

Borell said drivers should continue to use caution, slow down, and watch for icy patches as crews work to finish clearing the roads. “Even though we’re not seeing snow falling necessarily,” she noted, “it’s still a time to take it slow.”
