NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 18, 2022) – The community is getting its first chance to check out the new track at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium.

The stadium is opening back up Friday morning after a more than two-month closure while workers tore out the existing track and replaced it with a red, polyurethane one. New Philadelphia School Superintendent Amy Wentworth says after some initial delays, they weren’t sure if it was going to be done in time for the Quakers’ home opener against the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.

“We made it just in time but that’s about as close as you can get.”

A $50,000 contribution from the City of New Philadelphia and grants from the Kimble and O’Donnell foundations brought the school district’s share of the more than $300,000 project down to about $185,000. Wentworth says the new track looks great and will be a lot more comfortable to walk and run on.

“I think it turned out so well. It is just really nice to be able to provide this sort of facility for our schools and our community. I just couldn’t be more pleased with it.”

She says they haven’t gotten around to painting the lane numbers and marking some of the relay exchange zones but can take care of that later.
