TCC Elementary developing leaders through volunteerism
DOVER (WJER) (Nov. 8, 2024) – Tuscarawas Central Catholic Elementary’s latest giving back project involves helping neighbors with some fall chores.
Principal Jessica DeBois says the school has a Principal’s Advisory Committee with fifth and sixth grade students who learn leadership skills as well as organize activities and charity work. Those students have volunteered to go rake leaves for those in need after school today.
DeBois says it’s all part of the educational experience at TCC Elementary.
“We look at it as God’s work,” she said. “We’re here to serve others, and we’re also good citizens and so that’s part of what we want to teach them at the school is community service.”
DeBois says the project was an easy choice for the students.
“They like to be outside, so that’s something they thought about,” she said. “It’s been nice outside, so they were like ‘let’s rake leaves for people,’ because it’s something that they wanted to do that was fun for them.”
DeBois says students in the committee have also been involved with food drives and soup kitchens. They will also be hosting an upcoming carnival for the younger kids in the school.
“That’s what we’re trying to build are future leaders. We always talk about how we can make a difference and how we’re not just here for ourselves, but we’re here to serve others, and this is part of teaching them how to do that,” she said.
